The Ministry of Public Works and Environment is in the final stages of completing engineering design for a new safety railing at Gibbs Hill Lighthouse, a spokesman said.
Visitors have been unable to gain full access to the upper outside platform of the Southampton landmark, which was temporarily closed as a safety precaution following a tragic incident in January.
A ministry spokesman said once the design is complete, the project will move into the fabrication and installation stages.
Visitors can continue to enjoy the site and its views from within the structure.
The spokesman noted that their safety remains a priority.
He added: “Every effort is being made to restore full access to this landmark while maintaining safety standards.”
